We’ve all struggled with limiting beliefs before. Whether it’s thinking you’re too old to do something, that your dream job isn’t possible, or simply that you aren’t capable of changing something that makes you unhappy. You know the drill.

You’ve also probably heard a lot of people tell you that change is possible—and it is! But making it happen is a whole different ball game, and also the part where people usually lose their footing.

Here’s the thing: we can’t tell you exactly what it is you need to do to change your life. Everyone’s life, problems, and perspectives are different and we can’t speak for you. What we can do, is give you the tools, resources, and support to do it yourself. After all, the best person to understand your barriers and goals is you.

To start with, let’s look at what limiting beliefs are, and why they happen.

The Psychology Behind Limiting Beliefs

Most of the time, limiting beliefs are unconscious thoughts that your brain creates to act as a defense mechanism. Perhaps you’ve experienced something in the past that made you feel helpless, and now when you face difficult situations, those same feelings come up. Maybe you’re just insecure—and who hasn’t been there?

In any case, first and foremost, your limiting beliefs as they are right now, aren’t something to hate. While they are a hurdle in your journey to grow as a person, remember that they’re also created by your mind to protect you.

When you start confronting your limiting beliefs, try to do so from a place of compassion, instead of anger, fear, or resentment. This isn’t easy to do, but it is our specialty at ViveU Mastermind, so we can walk you through the process.

Identifying your limiting thoughts and beliefs can also be a bit difficult. Some people might not even know they have them. If you’re not sure, try this exercise:

  • Think about something you want to achieve. It can be as big as your dream house and job or as little as a coffee. Is there anything in your way? If so, what is it?
  • Once you’ve narrowed down the ‘what’, ask yourself ‘why’. Why is this stopping you?

You don’t have to pick apart your answer. The first step is simply just knowing that you want to change it.
